Where's a good place to learn about politics and other worldly happenings?

I'm seventeen and I'm completely out of it in terms of politics and happenings in the world. I'm home schooled, so I can't talk to other kids or my teachers, but I want to become more aware and understanding, but I don't know even where to begin. Is there a website or show or book I can read that's like, "The World for Dummies?" Where do you go for news? Once I get the basics, like, what the hell's the difference between a republican and a democrat, then I can use more normal news mediums. Thanks for your help!
